According to VentureBeat and Bloomberg, China's Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter model it calls the largest open-source AI system in the world. Reported around July 16-17, the model features a 1-million-token context window, native visual understanding, and an always-on reasoning mode. On the GDPval-AA v2 benchmark, which spans 44 occupations, Kimi K3 reportedly placed third overall, behind Claude Fable 5 Max and GPT-5.6 Sol Max but ahead of Claude Opus 4.8. Full model weights are scheduled for release on July 27. Timed just ahead of Shanghai's World AI Conference, the launch narrows the gap between Chinese open models and the closed U.S. frontier, and hands developers a frontier-level system they can run and fine-tune themselves.
