SAP has completed its acquisition of Prior Labs, an 18-month-old German startup, and pledged to invest more than 1 billion euros over four years to build it into a European frontier AI lab, according to SAP's newsroom and TechCrunch. Unlike the chatbot race, Prior Labs focuses on 'tabular foundation models', AI built for the structured, spreadsheet-style data that runs most businesses. Its open-source TabPFN model, published in Nature, has topped tabular benchmarks and passed three million downloads. SAP says Prior Labs will keep operating independently and maintain its open-source approach. The bet reflects a view that enterprise AI's biggest prize is not language, but the structured data inside company systems. Watch whether tabular models gain traction against general-purpose LLMs.
