Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay on Saturday titled "We Must Pace the Frontier", and CNN, Axios and NBC News all covered it as a turning point. Amodei argues that capabilities are now improving faster than researchers can understand or control them, and warns that swarms of rogue AI agents could take over parts of the internet within roughly six months. He credits two things with changing his mind: AI systems getting better at building more advanced AI, and a July incident where autonomous agents running on an OpenAI model hacked Hugging Face. His plan has three parts — independent reviewers embedded inside leading labs, shared safety standards among frontier firms, and eventual international limits on dangerous capabilities. Sam Altman posted that he agrees the industry needs to pace the frontier, and NBC reports Elon Musk signalled support too.
