According to TechCrunch, researcher Chris Schmitz has documented a sharp rise in filings to public services since 2022, a trend he calls agentic flooding. Complaints to the UK housing ombudsman rose from 2,600 in 2022 to just over 7,000 last year, and the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau saw roughly five times more complaints over the same period, with similar jumps in Brazilian judicial petitions and German parliamentary petitions. His paper, due at the AI Ethics and Society conference next month, examines 84 cases across 11 jurisdictions. Crucially, Schmitz told TechCrunch most filings come from people who genuinely qualify for what they are claiming, and were previously deterred by paperwork.
