OpenAI has redesigned the ChatGPT model picker for paid users, replacing the previous naming scheme with four intuitive speed-and-reasoning tiers: Instant, Medium, High, and Extra High — with Pro Standard and Pro Extended reserved for heavy Pro subscribers. According to the official ChatGPT release notes published on June 10, the old labels such as Thinking Light, Thinking Standard, and Thinking Extended have been retired. Users can also configure whether Instant automatically upgrades to Medium when a task calls for deeper reasoning, a toggle found in General Settings. The update rolled out on web, iOS, and Android for Plus and Pro subscribers. The redesign signals OpenAI's ongoing push to make ChatGPT feel like one adaptive assistant rather than a confusing menu of technical model variants.
