Tokyo lab Sakana AI shipped Fugu Ultra v2 and a cheaper sibling, Fugu Max, on September 11. As OrcaRouter explains in its breakdown, Fugu is not one model but a trained coordinator that splits a task across a pool of other models. The twist in v2 is that Claude Fable 5, Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra were removed from that pool, and Sakana still claims best or joint-best results on five of eight benchmarks, including 48.3 on Chartography against Claude Opus 5's 27.3.
